On Tuesday, March 18, 2008 a group of about 75 prominent Louisville
citizens gathered at the corner of Fourth Street and Muhammad Ali
(originally Walnut) to mark the 50th anniversary of Thomas Merton's
famous "Shining Like the Sun" epiphany, and to celebrate the renaming
of that corner as Thomas Merton Square.
Video shot, edited and produced by Rhoden Streeter and
Elizabeth Windisch.
Music for the video: "The Path" by Richard Sisto, from
his CD "Soul Searching." Used with permission.
Thomas Merton’s “Shining Like the Sun” Epiphany, March 18, 1958
In Louisville, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut, in the center of the shopping district, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that
I loved all those people, that they were mine and I theirs, that we could not be alien to one another even though we were total strangers…I have the immense
joy of being human, a member of a race in which God himself became incarnate. As if the sorrows and stupidities of the human condition could overwhelm me,
now I realize what we all are. And if only everybody could realize this! But it cannot be explained. There is no way of telling people that they are all
walking around Shining like the Sun!
